Butter on sandwiches/awkwardness is international

The Face
The Face
Thank God this wasn’t the face I made, but it’s what I felt like doing. So, apparently, I believe it is a European thing, people put butter on sandwiches-regardless of what is on it. Sure, I’ve heard of a grilled cheese/not even grilled or toasted but just cheese and butter that makes sense. NO, not here no matter what is on the sandwich there is always a base layer of butter. Not that any of you are interested, but today I had a sandwich with, you guessed it, butter, cheese, salami, spinach leaves, and pesto-surprising good! But entirely random.

So, while I am on my rant I also wanted to point out that awkwardness is an international problem. I went over to some classmates apartment to watch a film for class. Well you know when you hang out with people for the first time its always awkward because you don’t really know them or their humor. Well, this was 100 times worse because they are Dutch. Thus, the random things I say are lost of them. I’m pretty sure they just thought I was an American freak. It gets better though-the movie ends I go to say goodbye. The guy in front of me shakes her hand. That felt way too impersonal and awkward to me, so I was like okay option a) get as close to the door as possible to do an awkward hand wave goodbye option b) go for the handshake option c) try to run away. None of these were possible at the time. I was standing right next to her, so of course I go thank you for having me blah blah blah then, as only I can do- “do you hug?” Of course nobody is going to say no in situation like that and so we hugged and then I left. I had just learned her name that night! Of course, I made it worse by saying oh you must think I’m really weird-who says that after they just hug someone they don’t know!?! ahhh Long story short I have to see her every Thursday in class-we’ll see how that goes. I felt so awkward about it and I made the situation so much worse I started laughing to myself on my bike ride home-now all of Leiden thinks I’m weird.

Well, that it for my rant. Next time you are in an awkward situation…don’t hug the person!!
